Coffee export volume increases by 70%
The March coffee export volume grew by 70% to 265,399 60kilo-bags compared to 155,960 bags during the same month last year, the Uganda Coffee Development Authority has said in a report.
The value also increased by 65.6% at $24.22m (sh42.6b) from $14.63m (sh25.7b) during the same period last year
"For the first six months (October-March) of the coffee year 2006/07, coffee exports totalled 1.46 million bags with Robusta accounting for 1.13 million bags and Arabica 0.327 million bags. This represents an overall increase of 41% and 47.4% in volume and value respectively," said the report.
However, there was a drop in Arabica coffee quantities to about 47,000 bags compared to the same period last year. In contrast, Robusta coffee quantities shot to 660,284 bags.
The recovery in Robusta quantities was attributed to the new clonal coffee plants given under the Government's strategic intervention programme since 2001.
On the local market, prices for dry cherries of Robusta (Kiboko) ranged between sh950 and sh1,000 per kilogramme, while Arabica parchment prices in the Mount Elgon area were between sh2,300 and sh2,600.
