Uganda's coffee exports revenue rises 5% in August
Uganda's coffee export revenue has increased to 14.4 million U.S. dollars in August from 13.7 million dollars in July due to low supply on the global market, a monthly report has said.
The report from Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA), quoted by New Vision, said 175,526 60-kilo bags were exported in the month.
"There was a slight drop in the volume of coffee exports in August of 0.4 percent from 176,310 60-kilo bags to 175,526 bags. However, the corresponding revenue went up by 5.1 percent," it said.
"Volume and value dropped by 20 percent and 13 percent respectively compared to the same month last year," it added.
The report showed that average export price in August slightly went up to 137 cents from 130 cents per kilogram in July. Robusta coffee made more sales than Arabica due to the latter's global short supply.
The cumulative 12-month coffee export volumes from September 2005 to August 2006 stood at 1,983,714 bags, comprising 1,411,869 bags of Robusta and 571,845 bags of Arabica.
It marked a 21.5 percent drop from the previous season, which was attributed to the prolonged dry spell experienced during the year and to some extent the coffee wilt disease.
The disease was estimated to have destroyed close to 50 percent of the old Robusta coffee trees since it was first sighted in 1993.
The report noted that the month was characterized by instability in the global markets largely due to the dry weather in Brazil as the frost period from May to August came to an end.
