Ugandan Coffee Brews Whiff in Japan Shops
Zicofe, one of Uganda's leading producers and roasters of coffee, has made a huge stride of directly selling roasted beans coffee, powder and cups in Japan.
The company has opened a coffee shop on Prince Garden Hotel 3-13-31 Sakae Naka-Ku Nagoya Aichi-Japan and its is said to be the first Ugandan owned coffee outlet.
Zicofe also signed contracts supplying green coffee to three Japanese companies namely Wataru company which wants 100 tonnes on an annual basis, Katshuhara Group and Crystal Coffee company will be importing 18 tonnes each annually.
The success of Zicofe's deal, which came after their participation in the World Expo2005 in Japan, has not only opened up market routes and opportunities for other Ugandan coffee exporters, producers and farmers, but also branding Ugandan coffee which is highly demanded in the worlds second largest economy, will attract more revenue and create more jobs at home.
"Our shop was opened on May 22 by the Ugandan ambassador in Japan Mr John Birigwa. We are selling Uganda's finest Arabica coffee, which is organically grown on the mountains of Elgon and Sebei," the Director Zicofe Ms Rose Kato also managing the coffee shop in Japan said on a phone interview with Business Power. She said they take 100 kgs of roasted coffee every week and it is sold in form of power well-branded sachets.
Kato said that they have invested over Shs370m in establishing, paying a six-year license and furnishing the coffee shop, which is also promoting Uganda's Tourism. China is the other Asian country where Uganda has opened up coffee shops a venture, which started in 2002.
