Jamaica’s Coffee Farmers Application
The wait is over for thousands of coffee farmers who suffered millions of dollars in losses when their crops were destroyed by Hurricane Ivan in September 2004.
The Supreme Court will begin a two day hearing Wednesday into an application filed against the liquidators of the failed Dyoll Insurance Company.
Dyoll was responsible for the coffee insurance scheme prior to its collapse in February last year.
The application is seeking the disbursement of more than three million US dollars in damage claims submitted by the coffee farmers.
President of the Jamaica Agricultural Society, JAS, Norman Grant says the farmers' legal team will be seeking a speedy disbursement of funds.
The coffee farmers filed legal action last year to get the Court to separate funds for the payment of claims from other schemes in the ongoing liquidation of Dyoll.
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of the 6,000 coffee farmers who were facing lengthy delays in getting claims settled due to the collapse of Dyoll Insurance.
