Speaking with the RJR News Centre Wednesday night, JAS President, Senator Norman Grant, disclosed that the last coffee crop insurance scheme expired last month.
Senator Grant says international reinsurers have been reluctant to renew coverage.
According to the JAS President, Jamaica's multi-million dollar coffee industry could be in jeopardy.
"If the hurricane comes now, the farmers would have to absorb the loss because there's no insurance in place now.... But one of the difficulties is that the crop insurance is no longer a compulsory scheme," he said.
The development is another setback for coffee farmers who are still embroiled in a legal battle over a three million US dollar payout which they say is due to them for losses suffered during Hurricane Ivan.
The disputed money was managed by Dyoll under a Special Coffee Insurance Scheme.
But Dyoll's liquidator, John Lee, has dismissed the farmers' claim and contends that the money is part of a pool of funds for policyholders who had business with the insurance company.
