Government gives $100 million to hurricane-affected coffee farmers
It has been announced that the Government will be disbursing $100 million under the special payment scheme unveiled earlier this week for farmers whose crops were destroyed by Hurricane Ivan.
On Monday, the Government announced plans to make an advance pay out to the farmers until their court case with the liquidators of the collapsed Dyoll Insurance Company is completed.
At that time, it had not determined how much money would be paid out.
Agriculture Minister Roger Clarke told RJR News that the figure was agreed on during a meeting at his Ministry on Friday.
Last month, the coffee farmers suffered a setback after winning the first round of their legal battle with the liquidators of Dyoll.
Following the ruling that the farmers be paid US$3 million for losses suffered during Hurricane Ivan in 2004 the legal team representing the liquidators applied for leave to appeal the decision.
