Farmers in Ethiopia were awarded
Farmers in Mana Woreda, Jimma Zone of Oromia State, have earned 27.3 million birr from sale of coffee, the Woreda Agriculture and Rural Development Office said.

At a ceremony held to award 300 farmers who became food self-sufficient and registered high level of production as well as to 10 integrated development workers, Office Head Mulugeta Legesse said the farmers earned the income from the sale of 99,850 quintals of washed and unwashed coffee to the central market.

He said coffee supplied from the woreda to the central market was below the standard quality for years. But the farmers have for the first time managed to supply first and second grades quality coffee last fiscal year thus earning high level of income, Mulugeta explained.

Some farmers have bought lorries and small buses while four thousand of them have built tin-roofed houses.

He added that staff of the Woreda Agriculture and Rural Development Office, in collaboration with experts, woreda cabinet members and workers and heads of other government offices, is working to realize the strategy designed to extricate farmers from poverty and backwardness.

Awarding prizes, Woreda Administrator Nega Abafita and representative of the Jimma Zone Administrator, Sani Ahmed, said the farmers have shown encouraging results by spending their full time on development and urged other farmers to follow suit and strive for development.
