Coffee shops that fill customers' personal thermoses with coffee or tea at discount prices are becoming increasingly popular in Tokyo and Osaka.

Observers say such "coffee filling stations" allow people to enjoy high quality coffee and tea wherever they like, while reflecting on the huge numbers of pet bottles and cans that are usually discarded after drinks have been consumed.

Zo Jirushi Corp., headquartered in Osaka, initiated the idea, and six coffee shops in Tokyo and Osaka started supporting the service in April.

A sticker bearing an orange thermos that reads "tea-filling spot" is placed at the entrance of Cafe des Pres Hiroo in Minato Ward, Tokyo. The coffee shop fills customers' thermoses with 400 milliliters of blended coffee for 500 yen--about half the regular price.

According to the coffee shop, many of the customers who use the service are people working in the neighborhood, and mothers with children.
