Coffee Production in India

Coffee Production in India
Coffee production in the country is estimated to hit a four-year high 4.67 million bags, 6% higher than the previous year in the year beginning October 2006. This is in line with the world coffee production expected to rise nearly 10% to a four-year high of 123.6 million bags, on expectation of a jump in Brazil's crop, the US department of agriculture said.

With imports of about 4,00,000 bags, total domestic supply is expected to be nearly 6 million tonne. However, Indian coffee exports are expected to be highest in three-years at 3.46 million bags. After deducting 1.44 million bags for domestic use, ending stocks are expected to be 18% higher at 1.10 million bags.

In the current year, the country's coffee exports fell 12% to 83,370 tonne between January 1 and June 9 over the year-ago period, latest data released by the Coffee Board showed on Tuesday.

Industry officials attributed the fall to low availability, rising domestic consumption, and hoarding of coffee by farmers in anticipation of higher price realisations.

According to the figures given by the official, the country's total coffee output for 2005-06 (April-March) was at 2,73,000 tonne, down from the initial estimate of 2,82,000 tonne.

Production in Brazil, the world's biggest coffee producer, will climb 25% to 44.8 million bags, the department said on June 9 in its first forecast of global output. Since Brazil is the largest coffee producer, swings in Brazil's supplies of coffee account for a large portion of the change in the world total coffee supplies.

Brazil's biggest-ever crop of 53.6 million bags in the season starting in 2002 pushed global output to a record 126.8 million bags, sending coffee prices plunging.

Production in Vietnam, the world's second-biggest grower, will rise 13% to 13.9 million bags. Colombia, the No 3 grower, will produce 11.6 million bags, compared with 11.55 million a year earlier. A bag of coffee weighs 60 kg (132 pounds).

Peru's coffee production in 2006-07 is forecast to rise to 3.5 million bags. Other notable changes in production include: Ethiopia, down 5,00,000 bags; Burundi, up 4,50,000 bags; and Honduras, down 4,00,000 bags.

Total coffee supplies in 2006-07 are forecast at 146.9 million bags, up nearly 7% from the 2005-06 preliminary level. This should allow some recovery in ending stocks. With the increased supplies, coffee exports are forecast to recover. World coffee exports in 2006-07 are forecast at 92.8 million bags, up 7.2 million bags from 2005-06.
