Coffee Market New Situation

The Ministry told ENA yesterday that Ethiopia was able to improve its status from 5th to 4 th stage by holding the stated amount of share in the market.

The Ministry said Brazil, Colombia and Indonesia stand 1st to 3rd by holding 28, 20 and 15 per cent share respectively in the Japanese coffee market during the reported period.

It said Ethiopia stands 4th by increasing the amount of coffee being exported to Japan.

The Ministry said the amount of coffee exported to Japan over the stated period exceeded by 27.2 per cent that of 2005. The income secured has also increased by 33 per cent as compared to that of 2005.

Over 71 million USD had been secured from coffee exported to Japan during the year 2005, it said adding the income has increased to nearly 91 million USD in 2006.

The Ministry said a significant amount of coffee was exported to Japan in 2006 due to the care and due attention given to the quality of coffee on the side of coffee growers.

The support being provided by the government to coffee growers and exporters, the efforts made to promote Ethiopian coffee, the efforts by exporters to supply quality coffee to the market, among others, enabled to export a significant amount of coffee to Japan in the year 2006.

Importers, whom the Ethiopian Embassy in Japan approached, said Ethiopia has supplied quality coffee to Japan in 2006 better than ever.

Ethiopia's coffee is named as Mocca in Japan, the Ministry said, adding, its flavour is favored.

Concerned bodies engaged in coffee development in Ethiopia are expected to exert utmost efforts in 2007 to export increased amount of coffee to Japan, it said.
