A stop at a coffee bar can make it easy to get a delicious steaming cup of coffee. But it's not the only way to get a fast cup of coffee. If you want a quick mug of java but don't want to go to the trouble of brewing a whole pot, maybe one of those new "pod" coffee makers could get the job done. How well do they make a cup of coffee?
Aother option--pod coffee makers that use premeasured packets of coffee to make one or two cups at a time been tasted ($40 to almost $200).
Coffee from a pod maker costs more per cup than from a regular machine, but there are benefits. They're easy to use, fast, easy to clean, and convenient.
Some of the tested coffee makers took less than two minutes to brew from start to finish. Others took more than three minutes.
The coffee makers also were checked to see if they delivered a consistent cup of coffee. Some didn't. The temperature could vary by 20 degrees, and the volume could vary by a whole fluid ounce.
But most important, can you get a good, strong cup of coffee? Testers said the best machines are those that let you vary the strength of the brew by using two pods at a time.
One pod coffee maker that can be recommended is the Home Cafe from Mr. Coffee. It offers six brew strengths and is very easy to operate. The Mr. Coffee Home Cafe coffee maker costs $80, and a box of 16 coffee pods costs about $4.
