Coffee excise taxes to drop
The excise tax on all types of coffee will fall by ten percent starting January 1, 2007, according to the new Fiscal Code proposed by the Ministry of Public Finance.
The coffee excises decreased from 850 to 680 euros per ton for unrefined coffee, to 1,000 euros for roasted coffee and 4,000 euros for instant coffee.
Coffee consumption in Romania is among the lowest in Europe, with an average of 1.51 kilograms per capita, compared to an average of seven kilograms in EU states.
Data issued by the National Statistics Institute (INS) show that Romania imported in 2005 more than 44,000 tons of coffee, up two tons compared with the previous year.
