Coffee Beans Overheat, Ignite At Roaster
What first appeared to be a minor problem turned into quite a scare Monday for some local coffee roasters.
Workers at Coffee Bean International in northwest Portland say it started when 230 pounds of beans got too hot. They flashed when they came from the roaster, and a fire broke out.
Roasters went through four fire extinguishers before they realized that the job had to be handled by the professionals.
"We were just trying get the fire out. We had fire extinguishers we used and it just got so bad we had to get everyone out," Randy Wright told KOIN News 6.
"When I couldn't see myself, when I couldn't see my hand, could see nothing. It was too smoky for me to see where I was going, then it was time to go," Brian Dyton said.
Dyton reportedly singed his eyelashes and eyebrows trying to put out the blaze.
No one was seriously hurt.
