Australia’s coffee habits

Australia’s coffee habits
Austtralians drink more coffee than ever before and they are gulping it down in ‘fast coffee' outlets according to a new report.

Coffee chains such as Gloria Jeans and McCafé have positively affected coffee consumption by attracting additional segments of the Australian public into the ‘café society'.

With a 50% increase between 2001 and 2005, Gloria Jeans and McCafe outlets are approaching number one chain on the list Michel's Patisserie; however, Starbucks has enjoyed far less success, with only 58 outlets opened countrywide so far.

Australia's coffee market for 2005 was worth $840 million (at wholesale prices) for instant coffee and ground/roasted beans served in cafés, restaurants, hotels, motels, at work and at home.

The food service industry served up approximately 1.26 billion hot coffees during the year from roasted or ground beans, which represents a 65% increase within 10 years, and it is forecasts a growth rate of around 5% per year for this market out to 2008.

But despite the swelling numbers of cafés, Australia's coffee habit still lags behind Japan, Italy and some Scandinavian countries, with an average of 2.4kg of coffee per head of population each year here, compared with 3.3kg per person in Japan and 5.4 in Italy.

Coffe experts say that the next opportunity for Australian coffee market growth is in faster, cheaper coffee. The extra kilos consumed by other developed countries are not made up by consumers sipping coffee and ‘relaxing' in expensive premises, but rather by quick service to people with little time to spare and needing an energy boost.
