A new coffee cup

A new coffee cup
Admit it -- you don't always tote your own mug to the coffee stand for your regular caffeine fix. But your eco-conscience may find a salve in a new product being pitched by local startup MicroGreen Polymers.

Imagine a coffee cup that conducts less heat and is made entirely from recycled materials. That's one of the ideas behind an Arlington startup that just raised $2.4 million in financing.

The cups are made from recycled plastic and are better insulators than regular cups for to-go joe. In fact, the Arlington-based company claims that these enviro jewels use 100 recycled plastic, production includes no harmful gases and "the plastic found in a common 20 oz soda bottle is enough to make seven 12 oz coffee cups."

"The process is not only greener, but the concept that we can use recycled material makes a lot of economic sense," said MicroGreen co-founder, who created the company four years ago while working in the University of Washington's microcellular plastics laboratory. The company also says its plastics could be used for automotive parts, electronics and food packaging.

A new and improved coffee cup certainly could resonate with eco-friendly Seattleites who don't like the idea of using "java jackets" or "double cupping" their hot beverages.
