A few facts about convenience and coffee
Convenience stores and coffee play a part in many busy lives. At its Web site, the National Association of Convenience Stores in Alexandria, Va., has tidbits about both. - The average time it takes a customer to walk in a convenience store, purchase an item and leave is three to four minutes. The components of that trip, on average, are: 35 seconds to walk from the vehicle to the store, 71 seconds to select an item, 42 seconds to wait in line, 21 seconds to pay and 44 seconds to leave the store (Source: National Association of Convenience Stores' 2002 Speed Metrics Research)
- The percentage of coffee buyers who knew they were going to purchase coffee when they entered a convenience store is 96, making coffee the top planned purchase at a convenience store. (Source: The Learning Exchange, Willard Bishop Consulting) - Among beverages consumed daily in the United States, coffee ranks third in popularity, with 51 percent of adults saying they drink coffee daily. Seventy-nine percent said they drink water daily and 58 percent said they drink soft drinks daily (Source: National Coffee Association of U.S.A.)
- Specialty coffee sales are increasing by 20% per year and account for nearly 8% of the 18 billion dollar U.S. coffee market.
- Nearly 52% of Americans over 18 years of age drink coffee every day. This represents over 100 million daily drinkers. 30 million American adults drink specialty coffee beverages daily; which include a mocha, latte, espresso, café mocha, cappuccino, frozen/iced coffee beverages, etc.
- Men drink as much coffee as women; each consuming an average of 1.6 cups per day. Women seem to be more concerned about the price than men. Among coffee drinkers, the average consumption in the United States is 3.2 cups of coffee per day.
- 65% of all coffee is consumed during breakfast hours, 30% between meals, and the remaining 5% with other meals.
- 35% of coffee drinkers prefer black coffee
- 65% prefer to add sugar and/or cream
- On an average, 250 Cups of espresso and coffee drinks are sold per day at almost any espresso drive-thru business with a great visible location. (500 cups per day is extraordinary.)
- The United States imports in excess of $4 Billion worth of coffee per year.
- Americans consume 400 million cups of coffee per day making the United States the leading consumer of coffee in the world.
